Why eSIM Isn't Working – 10 Common Mistakes and Fixes
The vast majority of eSIM problems have nothing to do with the eSIM itself, but with one missed setting on the phone. The good news is that almost every issue can be fixed in a few minutes once you know what to check.
We went through the most common questions our users send via WhatsApp and AI chat and put together a list of the ten most frequent mistakes, each with a concrete fix.

1. Data roaming is turned off
This is by far the most common reason an eSIM doesn't work. A travel eSIM line technically always behaves as a roaming network, even when you're in the country the plan was bought for. If roaming is off for that line, the phone won't connect to data.
Fix: go into settings for that specific eSIM line and turn on Data Roaming, not just general mobile data.
2. The eSIM line isn't set as primary for data
If you have two active lines (a physical SIM and an eSIM), the phone uses only one for data at a time. If the physical SIM is still set as primary for data, the eSIM won't even try to connect.
- Check which line is marked as Cellular Data / Mobile Data
- Switch to the eSIM line manually if needed
- Leave the other line only for calls and SMS
3. The phone is carrier-locked
Phones bought on contract through certain carriers can be locked to that carrier only. Such a phone physically refuses profiles from other networks, including eSIMs. Check this with the carrier the phone was bought from or in the phone's settings.
4. The QR code was already used
Every QR code can only be scanned and installed once. If you've already installed the eSIM on one phone and try again on another, you'll get an error. If you're switching phones, contact support before attempting another install.
5. No coverage in that part of the destination
In remote or mountainous areas, mobile network signal can be weak or absent regardless of the eSIM. This isn't an eSIM fault but a real coverage limitation of the terrain, just like with local carriers.
6. The plan expired or ran out of data
Check your data usage on the dashboard. Plans have both a time limit and a data limit, so either one may have run out sooner than expected.
- Check remaining GB on the dashboard
- Check the plan's expiry date
- Buy a top-up if data ran out but your trip continues
7. The phone wasn't restarted after installation
Sometimes the phone needs a simple restart to correctly recognize the new network after installing an eSIM profile, especially if the line is on but signal doesn't appear right away.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my eSIM say no signal?
The most common cause is data roaming being off for that line, or weak coverage in that area.
Can I install the same eSIM on two phones?
No, a QR code can only be used once, on one device.
What if I've used up all my data?
You can buy a top-up directly from your dashboard and keep using the same line.
How do I check my data usage?
Log in to your GoConnect account, where the dashboard shows remaining GB and plan expiry in real time.
