eSIM on iPhone: installation, two lines, and data setup
For iPhone users, installing an eSIM profile usually takes only a few minutes, and most issues come from incorrect data settings after installation, not from the installation itself.
In this guide we walk through the whole process, from scanning the QR code to setting which line handles data and which handles calls.

Before you install
Check that your iPhone supports eSIM (models from iPhone XS onward) and that it isn't carrier-locked. You'll also need a stable Wi-Fi connection, since the QR code installation happens over the internet.
Installing the eSIM profile via QR code
After purchasing a plan on the GoConnect dashboard, the QR code arrives by email and is also available in your account. Open Settings, then Cellular, then Add eSIM, and choose to scan the QR code with the camera.
- Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM
- Scan the QR code with the camera, or enter details manually
- Wait for the profile to download and activate
Running two lines at once
iPhone lets you use two active lines at the same time – your home physical or eSIM line, and a new eSIM line for travel. After installation, in Settings you can label each line, for example 'Home' and 'Travel'.
This is especially useful because you can keep your home number for calls and texts, while the new eSIM line is used purely for internet abroad.
Setting up data and default lines
Under Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data, choose the new eSIM line as the source for internet. For calls and texts you can keep your home line as the default.
- Data: set to the new eSIM line
- Default number for calls/texts: keep your home line
- Turn on Data Roaming only for the eSIM line, not for your home line
The most common mistake: roaming turned off
The most common reason an eSIM 'doesn't work' after installation is that Data Roaming was left off for the new line. Without roaming enabled, the eSIM can't reach the network abroad, no matter how correctly the profile was installed.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use two eSIM lines without a physical SIM?
Yes, newer iPhone models support running two eSIM lines at once, with no physical card needed.
What if I lose the QR code after installation?
The QR code is only needed for installation. Once the profile is on the phone you no longer need it, but it stays available in your GoConnect account.
Do I need to turn off my home line for eSIM to work?
No, both lines can stay active. You just need to set which line handles data correctly.
Why doesn't my eSIM work even though I scanned the QR code?
The most common cause is Data Roaming being off for that line. Check settings and turn roaming on.
